LISTEN: Here's where you should be storing medication

Here are some tips on keeping your medication safe and secure.

Many people store their medication in bathroom cabinets, often because it seems like the most logical place, and it's what we see in movies and TV shows.

As it turns out, the bathroom is one of the worst places to store medicine. But where should you store it, and what is the right way to keep it safe?
Proper storage is essential not only for keeping your medication effective but also for preventing poisoning accidents, as highlighted by Medline Plus.
If you have children, it’s especially important to keep pills, syrups, and other medications out of their reach.
The way you store your medication can directly affect its potency and safety.

Here's how to store your medication:
Medicine should always be stored in a cool, dry place, such as a dresser drawer, closet, or kitchen cabinet, away from heat sources like stoves, sinks, and hot appliances. Exposure to heat, air, light, and moisture can affect the medication’s effectiveness.
Storing medicine in bathrooms, where heat and moisture are common, can reduce its potency and cause it to spoil before its expiration date.
Always keep medicine in its original container, and remove the cotton ball, as it absorbs moisture.
Ensure that medications are kept out of the reach and sight of children, and consider securing them with a childproof latch or lock for added safety.
How to detect damaged medicine:
Don't use pills that are stuck together, harder or softer than usual, cracked or chipped.
Medicine that has changed colour, smell or texture, even before expiration, should also be avoided.
Here's how to safely dispose of medicine:
Always discard medication that has expired.
Do not flush your medicine down the sink or toilet unless approved.
Before throwing your medicine in the bin, mix it with a product that ruins it, such as coffee grounds or kitty litter, and put the mixture in a sealed bag.
You can also return unused medicine to a pharmacy.
Always consult your doctor if you're unsure, looking for advice or have any questions.
