Every now and then, an optical illusion surfaces that sends the internet into a frenzy.
In 2024, a video of a golden retriever seemingly sitting at the bottom of a pool left people baffled.

There are also entire Reddit and X threads dedicated to mind-bending illusions and confusing perspectives.
Anyone can create and share their optical illusions, which is precisely what Canine Cottages did.
Canine Cottages is a travel website for dog-friendly properties and their puzzle from 2019 has resurfaced.
This seemingly easy puzzle has once again caught the attention of many people on the internet.

Some managed to spot "adorable little Frenchie Pierre" fairly quickly, while others had to give up.
At the Canines Cottages HQ, it took them an average of two minutes and 49 seconds to find Pierre.

Whether or not you're a genius regarding these "Where's Waldo?" type puzzles and other optical illusions, it seems like they always capture people's attention.

As it turns out, there's a scientific reason why we can't get enough of these frustrating games.
Scientific American spoke to Paul Schrater, a computer scientist who studies intrinsic motivation and learning at the University of Minnesota, about the psychology behind these games:
Our brains are designed to be very complex constraint-satisfaction machines. We’re goal seeking, and having a goal means defining a constraint on an outcome. Satisfying that constraint can involve a whole path toward the goal that’s unenjoyable, like climbing a mountain to reach food or safety. Achieving the goal involves releasing the goal, which is satisfying – but it’s a peculiar kind of nonhedonic kind of satisfaction.
