LOOK: Iconic golden syrup brand updates its dead lion logo
Updated | By The Drive with Rob and Roz
Have you ever truly noticed the logo on Lyle's Golden Syrup?
There are very few brands that have such a recognisable look as the green and gold syrup tin.
Lyle's Golden Syrup has been a global household name for centuries since it launched its green tin with golden lion packaging in 1881.

Since 1883 it has not changed its branding and holds the Guinness World Record for the world’s oldest unchanged brand packaging.
According to The Independent, the design was created by the founder, Abraham Lyle, a Scottish businessman who used the Biblical story of Samson as his inspiration.
In the story of Samson, found in Judges 14, Samson kills a lion with his bare hands and does not share what he has done with anyone. Later he returns to find the lion carcass surrounded by bees and they have made a hive inside which he harvests.

At his wedding, he shares the honey and a riddle: "Out of the eater, something to eat; out of the strong, something sweet".
Lyle used this and turned it into the design you so well know.
And, if like many of us, you haven't noticed until now that the lion is indeed dead, you are not alone.
No matter how fond people are of the iconic branding, the company have decided to adapt to more modern times, and their packaging will now only feature a lion's face and a single bee.
We’re excited to unveil a fresh redesign for the Lyle’s Golden Syrup brand. While we’ll continue to honour our original branding with the heritage tin, consumers need to see brands moving with the times and meeting their current needs.- James Whiteley (brand director for Lyle’s Golden Syrup)

Because of its well-known branding, the response to the new design has been mixed:
The original is better by a country mile but hey, ho, it’s syrup. Won’t keep anyone awake at night I suppose.

Folk are actually annoyed at this. 😂😂😂

Honestly, get a life.
While others are only now finding out what the original design actually is:
Never knew it was dead - thought it was sleeping 🤣

Luckily, fans of the old school design will be happy to know that all other Lyle products will be changing to the new design, while the tins will remain the same.
