As the leading search engine worldwide, Google is a rich data source. From the most popular searches each year to your own search history, the data it collects can reveal fascinating insights about individuals and society as a whole.

Data scientists at WordTips decided to find out which word definitions were the most searched for in 2024.

They used Semrush’s Keyword Research Tool and ranked the words based on the volume of Google searches for their definitions. To ensure accuracy, they conducted searches in local languages, capturing a diverse global perspective.

Some interesting finds:

Demure, fascism, and resilience are the most searched-for words in six different countries.
"Boyceta" (Brazilian slang for a trans man) is the most searched-for word worldwide with 220,000 searches in Brazil per month.
The most searched-for definition in the USA is gaslighting with 110,000 monthly searches.
The UK's most searched-for definition is diversity with 9,9000 monthly searches.
South Africa's most searched-for definition is dyslexia with 9,900 monthly searches.
