Springbok flanker Phepsi Buthelezi and Siyasanda Khathi, a former clerk, have been together for seven years.

Their love story began in high school at a concert at Durban High School, where Buthelezi was a student.

At the matric farewell fundraiser, Kathi – then a Grade 11 learner at Danville Park Girls High – took to the stage for a contemporary dance solo.

In an interview with YOU magazine, Buthelezi recalled that only one performance truly stood out to him: Kathi's.

It was almost love at first sight, and after the concert, he introduced himself – marking the start of their journey together.

But he wasn't ready to give up just yet – his persistence paid off, and eventually, she said yes to their first date.

From high school sweethearts to fiancés, their love story has only grown stronger.

The couple recently shared details about the day Buthelezi popped the question.

While on a private game drive at Phinda Private Game Reserve, he made up an elaborate story, telling Khathi they were meeting the local inkosi (tribal chief) to keep his real plan under wraps.

When the ranger announced they had arrived, Khathi was surprised by what she saw. Instead of a formal meeting, she found a beautifully set picnic, complete with candles, sparkling wine, and flowers.

And that’s when Buthelezi got down on one knee.

Of course, she said yes.
