Long-term relationships can sometimes feel strained, especially if they start to feel routine or predictable.

However, experts also suggest that simple, everyday practices can help reignite attachment, increase infatuation, and boost overall marital satisfaction.

In 2022, researchers Sandra JE Langeslag and Kruti Surti explored how "motivated attention" can impact feelings of love and marital satisfaction.

Their study suggests that something as simple as looking at a picture of your spouse might actually improve your perception of them.

Langeslaf and Surti tested "the impact of positive reappraisal of one’s spouse, as well as up-regulating positive emotions unrelated to a spouse, on increased spouse attachment and infatuation, marital satisfaction, and motivated attention to a spouse."

Their findings revealed that viewing pictures of a spouse can boost attachment, marital satisfaction, and infatuation. Interestingly, merely thinking about a spouse's positive qualities did not have the same effect.

This phenomenon is also linked to looking at photos of your partner as a baby or child.
