Ever since their inception in 1972, their hits have seemingly been on a loop on radio stations, television, social media, and streaming services.

They were a household name even before the hit musical 'Mamma Mia!' and subsequent films of the same title.

The four members' impact and influence on music and other industries is immeasurable.

Now, Agnetha Faltskog, Bjorn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson, and Anni-Frid Lyngstad have been honoured with the most prestigious knighthood in Sweden, their home country.

According to Sky News, The Order of the Vasa has not been handed to anyone in almost 50 years, but the four stars were given this knighthood by King Carl XVI Gustaf.

Their titles were given as "Commander of the First Class" of the order for "very outstanding efforts in Swedish and international music life".

The Royal Order of Vasa "is given in recognition of personal efforts for Sweden or for Swedish interests, as well as the successful performance of public duties and assignments".

This order lay dormant until 2022 and when it was opened again. The public was asked to nominate candidates.

ABBA was among the nominees approved by the King and the Swedish government.

Their knighthood comes 50 years after their Eurovision Song Contest win in Brighton with their iconic single, 'Waterloo'.
