The festive season is meant to be a time filled with love and happiness. However, spending long periods with family members can sometimes become stressful and tense, even among those you love most.

Issues like sibling rivalry might arise, or guests could overstay their welcome.

Typically, family fights don't start before the holiday season is in full swing.

An anonymous user recently posted on Reddit to ask for advice regarding a Christmas dilemma.

The poster, @Constant_Promotion67, shared their situation on a subreddit called AITAH (which stands for Am I The A**hole here?).

On these subreddits, people post about their issues and ask whether they're in the right – or wrong.

In his post, the user explains that this is the second year in a row that their older brother, Liam, is organising a Secret Santa gift exchange.

LISTEN: Stop asking friends to help you move!

However, this Secret Santa is not like your typical gift exchange.

Each family member submits a wishlist, and gift-givers are not allowed to deviate from this list. Some wishlists have wildly extravagant requests, such as trips to Bali or designer bags.

He explains that last year he had a tight budget, and although his recipient had a luxury gift list, he could only afford a gift card. Naturally, the recipient was less than thrilled.

This created tension, as other "luxury-listers" were also unhappy. Only a few people adhered strictly to the items on their wishlists.

This year, Liam changed the rule so that people with matching budgets would exchange gifts. This meant luxury givers would be paired with luxury listers.

The change upset several family members and divided the group into those who were in favour of the new rules and those who were not. Liam then accused his brother and another family member of stirring the pot and causing drama.

That's when it all truly kicked off.

They were called names and eventually didn't want to be involved if it was just about spending money.

Family members are supposed to support you and not pressure you to spend beyond your means.

Being able to spend another year together should be the most important part.
