Reality singing competitions - Do they produce real stars?
Many people are aware of the concept of televised singing competitions, but some are left to wonder if the winners of these competitions achieve much success after. Journalist Christelle du Toit tackles the question.
The televised singing competition format originated with the wildly successful 'American Idol', and the genre has enjoyed a long run in many different countries.

Despite changing cultures over the past decades the genre has managed to keep on going without losing too much momentum because of the unique mix of elements present.
Televised music shows incorporate the reality aspect of television and combine it with celebrity involvement as judges, and it give people a chance to have their voices heard when they vote.
This continued success of the genre has prompted studies to dtermine whether or not the winners of these shows end up being more successful than their traditional counterparts, and the results might shock you.

One study conducted by Cho and colleagues determined that contestants who won their respective competitions managed to stay on the charts longer than non-contestants, as well as bringing in larger sales figures.
