As it turns out, there are thousands of people who have never fully understood the message of this hit.
When you think of the legendary rapper and singer Shaggy, one very specific song instantly implants itself in your brain.

'It Wasn't Me' is undoubtedly one of the musician's most iconic songs and for good reason, what with its catchy tune and memorable lyrics.
Most people who have heard the song and listened to the lyrics would have to admit that the song is clearly about cheating.
Specifically, a person who is defending themselves after being accused of cheating by their partner.

But much to everyone's surprise, 25 years after its release, Shaggy has revealed that the song is actually an anti-cheating song!
In a recent interview with People, the musician was asked about being labelled a "player" because of 'It Wasn't Me', even though he has been happily married to Rebecca Packer for the last 10 years.
His answer was quite shocking:
It was a big misconception with that song because that song is not a cheating song. It's an anti-cheating song. It's just that nobody listened to the record to the end.- Shaggy

He goes on to explain that at the end of the song, a conversation between two people takes place where one says that they can't believe the cheater got caught and that they should just say, "It wasn't me".
The cheater, however, chooses to do the more honourable thing by saying that they will apologise to their partner for the hurt they've caused.
Nobody hears that part! That's what the song says. But everybody's just caught up on that, “It wasn't me, it wasn't me." It's an anti-cheating song. No one ever really buys into that, and I keep explaining it to people. Then, they go listen to it back and be like, “Oh dude, I totally missed that.- Shaggy
Now you've heard it from the horse's mouth.
If anyone ever tries to use this song as a defence for a cheater's actions, their plan is now foiled.
