Who do you think consumes the most alcohol?
A beer while watching the rugby or a glass of wine with dinner sometimes sounds like just the thing you need.

Unfortunately, alcohol addiction is very real and a problem in many people's lives.
Everyone is different and for some people, there is no such thing as moderate alcohol consumption.
While many of us might think we know which countries are the big drinkers, a study conducted by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) might shock you.

They have recently released their latest publication, 'Health at a Glance', which "provides the latest comparable data and trends on different aspects of the performance of health systems in OECD countries. It provides striking evidence of large variations across countries in indicators of health status and health risks, as well as in the inputs and outputs of health systems".
They look at various statistics on many topics including healthcare, drug use, smoking, and, of course, alcohol consumption.
In the study of 33 countries, it was found that 19% of the average proportion were heavy drinkers, meaning they binge drink once a month.

Countries where drinking is illegal were obviously low on the list but some of the top countries for binge drinkers were Denmark with 37%, Romania with 36 %, and the United Kingdom and Luxembourg with 35%.

There was also a significant difference in the average amount of men versus the amount of women who binge drink.
Across the OECD countries, 26% of men admitted to heavy episodic drinking once a month compared to only 12% of women.
So let this be a little reminder to enjoy any alcohol responsibly.
