Owning a dog, cat, or any other type of pet can teach children valuable lessons, help with loneliness, and be a source of unconditional love.

There are so many options available, whether you decide on something cute, funny, old school or completely original.

Some names are more popular than others, and they will probably always remain a classic.

Spot, a pet insurance company, studied the data they have collected and found the most popular pet names in the United States.

The top 10 most popular names list includes Nala (of 'Lion King' fame), Leo, Daisy, and Max (a timeless favourite).

In third place is the name Milo, which originates from Germany and means 'soldier' and 'merciful'.

Cat owners might be inspired to use this name after the 1986 film 'The Adventures of Milo and Otis' and dog owners after seeing the Jack Russell (Max) play Otis in 'The Mask'.

Second on the list is the name Bella (Italian) which translates as "beautiful". The name also became a popular choice for babies following the 2009 publication of 'Twilight'.

Luna takes the number one spot as the most popular name in the USA with the original name belonging to an ancient Roman moon goddess. 

The top name in 37 out of the 50 states is especially prevalent amongst female black cats but is used for cats and dogs.

One of the most well-known Lunas in pop culture is the black cat from 'Sailor Moon' and has seemingly contributed to the name's popularity.

According to the American Kennel Club, many of the top names from 2023 remained on the list for this year, with only two names not included on the previous list as well (Coco and Nala).
