Travelling can be fun and joyous, but if you are travelling with small children, it also gets more tough.

Especially on an airplane.

In a very confined space, children might get frustrated and won't necessarily just sleep during the whole flight.

Unfortunately, for some parents, not all passengers are considerate, and now they have to deal with the stress of the children and a bunch of strangers.

Just with many other aspects of life, any and all tips to make travel easier are always welcome.

Jess Darrington is a mom of two, a one-year-old and a three-year-old, who creates travel content.

She specialises in sharing family travel tips, hacks, and advice.

Her family love to travel, and she has shared many videos that have gone viral, including a special series called: "If mothers designed airports there would be...".

These videos list practical solutions and options that in an ideal world, would be at every airport and would assist parents while travelling:

Most of her advice is well-received, but one video caused a bit of backlash when she shared an airplane seat hack.

When booking a flight you can choose where you would like to be seated.

Unfortunately, most flights have rows of three seats which makes it hard for a family of four to book seats next to each other.

In this video, Jess shows that her family would book two aisle seats for each parent and a window seat for each toddler, leaving the middle seat open.

This usually results in no one booking the middle seat, and the family end up having a whole row to themselves.

She was also very clear that this does not always work.

Watch her explain here:

However, this still upset many viewers, who said that if a stranger were to book the middle seat, the family would then probably ask them to swap or move around to accommodate them.

They also shared experiences they've had: "I had someone do this to me I was stuck in the middle seat between a mom and her young son. She kept feeding him snacks by hand over me, I asked if he should swap seats with me to sit closer she goes 'no he likes the window' then kept dropping crumbs on my lap until a flight attendant moved me."

One viewer shared how they dealt with this situation: "We do this too! When it works, great! When it doesn't, the person in the middle gets their choice of a window or aisle. Win-win!"

It appears that this advice is more hit or miss and it truly depends on how full the flight is or who the person in the middle seat is.

Here are some of her other travel tip videos:
