There have been the biggest productions, the biggest box office hits, and the most incredible stories brought to the big screen.

Every year, we see the best of the best being honoured at the Academy Awards.

Yet, on the list of greatest of all time, there is only one movie from the last 23 years that has made it onto the list.

Letterboxd is a very popular platform where film lovers, or anyone who enjoys watching movies, can log what they have watched and when.

The site also offers so much more than that.

They have also become very well known for their red carpet interviews where they ask film stars, directors, and others in the industry to share their favourite movies of all time:

One of Letterboxd's most popular lists is called the 'Official Top 250 Narrative Feature Films'.

Here is how the rankings were determined by the person who compiled the list: "Letterboxd's Top 250 movies, based on the average weighted rating of all Letterboxd users. I removed all stand-up specials, stage plays, concert films, documentaries, shorts, 'collection listings' and other 'rarities', so only feature length narrative movies are listed here. Films should have a minimum of 5,000 ratings to be eligible to enter the list."

What has surprised most people is that only one 21st century movie is in the top 10.

The number one spot and highest-ranked movie on Letterboxd is 'Harakiri' directed by Masaki Kobayashi (1962).

The rest of the top 5 are:

2. 'Come and See' directed by Elem Klimov (1985)
3. '12 Angry Men' directed by Sidney Lumet (1957)
4. 'Seven Samurai' directed by Akira Kurosawa (1954)
5. 'The Godfather: Part II' directed by Francis Ford Coppola (1974)

The only modern-day movie that made the top ten is the Best Picture-winning 'Parasite' at number nine.

This South Korean film made headlines when it was released in 2019.

Written and directed by Bong Joon-ho, this dark comedy and thriller follows a poor family who infiltrate the life of a wealthy family.

It became the first Korean film to win the 2019 Cannes Film Festival's top prize, the Palme d'Or, and walked away with multiple accolades during award season.

'Parasite' also made history as the first non-English-language film to win the Oscar for Best Picture.

The list's oldest entry is 'Sherlock Jr.,' which was released in 1924. The decade with the most entries is the 1990s, with 41 entries.
