VIDEO: Spanish athlete embarrassed after celebrating her win too early
Updated | By The Drive with Rob and Roz
As the saying goes, don't count your chickens before they've hatched.
Walking 20km might sound like it's a lot easier than running 20km, but it's still no walk in the park.
Dedicating most of your life to one sport is not a laughing matter and takes many years of hard work, dedication, and determination.

So it must be heartbreaking when you think you are going to win a medal only to watch it slip away.
Recently a video from the European Athletics Championships has made headlines as it captured this exact moment.
Spanish race walker Laura Garcia-Caro was competing in the 20km event and was sure she had firmly secured her third-place bronze medal.

As she approached the finish line, her Spanish flag was draped around her shoulders and she was ready to bring it home.
Unfortunately, as she started celebrating another athlete, Ukraine's Lyudmila Olyanovska crept up and overtook the Spaniard.

After the race Garcia-Caro spoke about the incident:
On the last lap I was quite exhausted and I tried to sprint with what I had left because I wanted to get as much advantage as possible to the last few meters. It is true that with 300 and 200 metres to go I was looking back because I knew that it was relatively close, but at 100 metres I looked again and I saw that I was 40 or 50 meters ahead and I already thought that she wouldn’t catch me. And well, I didn’t see her coming and I thought I already had it.- Laura Garcia-Caro
Antonella Palmisano and Valentina Trapaletti, both Italian athletes, won the gold and silver medals respectively.
Garcia-Caro will also be competing in the 2024 Paris Olympics where she'll probably be on high alert until she reaches the finish line.
