According to him, and a study in 2023, bananas actually reduce the health benefits of other ingredients, especially berries.

Here is why you should leave the bananas out of the smoothie:

  • They contain high levels of polyphenol oxidase, which can reduce the amount of beneficial flavanols in a fruit blend. Flavanols have antioxidative, anti-inflammatory, and antiviral properties.
  • Blueberries, strawberries, and raspberries are beneficial for brain and heart health but adding a banana to a berry smoothie decreases the amount of flavanols by 84%.
  • Ripe bananas are high in carbs and sugar which can increase blood sugar levels.

Next time you are getting ready to blend, try and replace the banana instead.
