Should restaurants be charging diners for this simple task?

There are certain things you expect when dining out.

If you are going to a fast food place, you expect your food to be done in a very speedy manner.

When dining at a sit-down establishment, you expect good service, good food, and a good time.

A corkage fee is quite common in certain restaurants, and if you do decide to order wine, the waiter will often open the bottle and pour the wine for you.

Corkage is "a charge (as by a restaurant) for opening a bottle of wine bought elsewhere".

However, you are either paying for the wine you bought at the restaurant or the fee to bring your own bottle. You won't find yourself paying for the waiter to open and pour the wine.

TikToker Sophie Milner shared a rather surprising story on the app and viewers couldn't believe what they were hearing.

Milner starts the story by explaining that she had joined a friend for their birthday at a restaurant and the friend celebrating her birthday had bought a cake.

While at the restaurant, they lit candles on the cake and sang 'Happy Birthday'.

Only after they were done with the festivities did a waiter approach them to tell them about the fee they would be charged £25 (around R580) if they cut the cake.

The comments on the video have been slightly divided.

Some people say this is expected since they brought "foreign" or "outside" food into this establishment.

More people are defending the celebrating party, making the argument that people have been bringing cakes to birthdays for decades!

  • "Omg YES this happened to us too I took off service charge because hell no?"
  • "Have we all forgotten the times it was absolutely normal to bring a birthday cake to any restaurant! and actually they'd put candles on AND BE HAPPY !!!"
  • "I would refuse to pay it. Especially if they told me AFTER the fact."

It seems like this new occurrence is not sitting well with most people.
