The country is expected to submit its official bid to host a Grand Prix in May 2025.

The committee says the evaluation process for the received bids will be concluded by the end of April.

Since the news was shared that South Africa hopes to bring the F1 back to its shores, Cape Town and Gauteng have been fighting about who would have the privilege of hosting the race.

It's been over three decades since the F1 engines have roared on African tarmac but the provinces are getting their fists out and staking their claim on the potential race.

The competition is between two tracks – a street circuit in Cape Town or the historic Kyalami race track outside of Johannesburg.

Committee member Mlimandlela Ndamase told AFP they will choose the winning bid in the third quarter of 2025.

While a street circuit could be very exciting the challenging Kyalami circuit offers 30km of zigzags and excitement.

The Grand Prix was last held in SA in 1993, with Alain Prost winning in a Williams.

Current F1 driver and multiple World Champion Lewis Hamilton has also supported the sport returning to Africa.
