WATCH: New Titanic conspiracy theory explains how it never actually sank
Updated | By Jean-Mari Schmidt
Just like Rose’s heart, the conspiracy theories will also go on…
These problems are not solely an issue for this app and can happen anywhere on the internet, but with TikTok videos going viral so quickly, they can spread rapidly.
The most recent case of a video going viral is a perfect example.
TikTok creator @mia_w22 is a self-proclaimed “Titanic kid”, which means she’s watched documentary after documentary about the iconic ship. In her now-deleted video, she decided to share her Titanic theory which is that it never sank and was part of an insurance fraud scheme.
Unfortunately, the 18-year-old did not receive the reaction she was expecting.
Before she decided to delete the video, it had over 11-million views and many TikTok users were blown away by her theory.
It’s understandable why many people did believe her theory, as she very adamantly states that she is “not wrong” and since she seems very knowledgeable on the subject.
Soon the comments on her video stopped being filled with others curious to find out more and turned into bitter criticism.
Other TikTokers soon started using her video in the hopes of curbing the spread of disinformation and pointed out that her theory was full of factual inaccuracies:
@raf_avila Let’s DEBUNK this Titanic “theory”! Original video: @🧃 #titanic ♬ original sound - Titanic Guy Raf Avila
She explained to Insider why she decided to delete the video after she found out she was receiving hate on the Titanic Reddit thread:
I made the theory video and posted it thinking all was well and that I was just sharing a fun theory. Then my boyfriend told me that I was getting hate on Reddit because someone posted my video to the r/titanic subreddit. This is the first instance of me being alerted to my facts in the video being incorrect.- Mia (@mia_w22 TikTok)
One Reddit user shared a link to a video that very thoroughly explains why the switch couldn’t have happened:
While it might have been a hard lesson for Mia to learn, hopefully others can also learn from this example.
