The first episode of 'Egoli: Place of Gold' aired on South African television on 6 April 1992.

From the very first episode, 'Egoli' became one of the country's most iconic television shows.

The last episode went out on 31 March 2010 but the show has remained a significant part of South African culture.
At six o'clock every weekday, the family would gather around the television and watch their favourite characters go through the ups and downs of life.
While there were many beloved characters, there were also villains, who were all welcomed into our homes.

With gripping storylines and drama seemingly around every corner, creator Frans Marx created something special.
In honour of its anniversary, Rob Forbes and Rozanne McKenzie invited some of its biggest stars to chat about all things 'Egoli'.
Brümilda van Rensburg played the role of 'Louwna', one of the show's titular characters.

She was part of the story from day one and loved every part of it:
Frans (Marx) gave us an idea because we rehearsed for three months in a little scout hall and rehearsed five episodes and started very cleverly with episodes 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. And when we saw that, because he made us see everything from the start. I knew that this was magic.- Brümilda van Rensburg
It didn't take long for 'Egoli' to become a South African institution.
Darryl Desmarais ('Stephen Edwards') was cast just three years into the series and spoke about being "the new kid":
I joined three years in, in 1995. You'd heard the rumblings, you know the story, and there's the history behind it. You've got that theme song in your brain. It's ingrained, you know, growing up. And, of course, they are all legends at the time. And you're coming in, and you're like, oh, I'm just this little actor, and I'm trying to do my little bit.- Darryl Desmarais
Desmarais also admiringly compared Marx to Steve Jobs for his innovative and strict approach.
It also doesn't come as a surprise that the actors are still recognised when going about their day or in stores, even being called by their character names.
I was only involved with the show for the last six years. And it's so funny. When the 'Egoli' reruns began, people would ask me, 'When are you coming on?' And I would tell them, 'Probably in 12 years.'- Mandi du Plooy-Baard (Lara)
From cast traditions to heartfelt stories about the connections between the actors themselves, 'Egoli' was so much more than just a show.
Especially for those involved in its creation.
Listen below to hear all the stories, including outrageous behind-the-scenes happenings, as Brümilda van Rensburg, Mandi du Plooy-Baard and Darryl Desmarais reunite!
