No matter what you buy, there will always be one constant.

The tiny packet of silica gel in the box or wrapping.

Have you ever wondered why this packet is amongst your things and why you can't eat it?

These packets are desiccants.

Desiccants are "hygroscopic substances that attract and absorb moisture from the surrounding air to maintain a state of dryness".

Sometimes, they can absorb up to 40% of their weight in water, and one of the most common forms of these materials is silica gel (a form of silicon dioxide).

These packets contain tiny silica pellets that collect moist air on their surface before absorbing it, helping protect the products from moisture damage.

But why would your product be damp?

Products might be shrink-wrapped, bubble-wrapped, or boxed but cannot be made moisture-proof. They could also be stored in humid environments, so the silica gel packet works as a little dehumidifier.

We shouldn't have to tell you why you shouldn't eat these packets, but if you are struggling to resist, this is a warning.

Silica itself is not toxic, but other contents of desiccants could be. The warning is also aimed more at the choking hazard the pellets and packets pose.

If you eat it and it causes an immediate obstruction in your throat, call emergency services as soon as possible.

The silica should pass through your system without any incident, but if a more dangerous chemical is involved, you need to seek medical attention.

Also, throw away these packets as soon as possible to prevent animals and children from ingesting them. While non-toxic for humans, they could harm dogs.
