WhatsApp to stop working on specific iPhone models

If you own an older iPhone, there might be some issues using WhatsApp soon...

WhatsApp will be making some major changes in 2025.

As you know, phone operating systems like iOS and Android must be updated.

However, at some point, older phones will no longer be up to date, and apps will also struggle to run on them.

Those using older phones need to listen up because soon you might not be able to access WhatsApp anymore.

As of January 1st, 2025, Android phones running KitKat (version 4.4) or earlier will no longer be able to support WhatsApp. 

But iPhone users are not entirely safe.

Apple phones running on iOS 15.1 or earlier have until May 5th, after which users must upgrade their devices, update their software, or say goodbye to their group chats.

According to IOL, WhatsApp's parent company, Meta, has decided this is necessary for technological advancement.

Features like multi-device support, encryption updates, and even AI integrations demand more modern hardware and software.

The South African writes, "WhatsApp explained the need to phase out support for older software, citing advancements in security, encryption, and new features. Devices running outdated systems cannot support these updates or protect user data effectively."

The following devices will either need to be updated or replaced to continue using WhatsApp.

These Android devices will lose support on 1 January 2025:

  • Samsung: Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note 2, Galaxy Ace 3, Galaxy S4 Mini
  • Motorola: Moto G (1st Gen), Razr HD, Moto E 2014
  • HTC: One X, One X+, Desire 500, Desire 601
  • LG: Optimus G, Nexus 4, G2 Mini, L90
  • Sony: Xperia Z, Xperia SP, Xperia T, Xperia V
 

These iOS devices will lose support, starting 5 May 2025:

  • iPhone 5s
  • iPhone 6
  • iPhone 6 Plus

iPhone 5 users, which cannot update beyond iOS 12 will need to consider purchasing newer models.
