Why 2025 has fewer public holidays than 2024

One of the highlights of 2024 was that it had a lot of public holidays.

At first glance, this might sound confusing – don’t all years have the same number of public holidays? The answer is no, not necessarily.
South Africa observes 12 public holidays each year, but not all of them fall on weekdays, meaning you might get less time off than you'd expect.

Unfortunately, not all these days will fall on a weekday, meaning less time off.
Looking ahead to 2025, there will be two fewer public holidays compared to 2024.
According to the Public Holidays Act, when a public holiday falls on a Sunday, the following Monday is also a holiday. However, the same doesn't apply if the holiday falls on a Saturday.

For example, National Women’s Day on August 9 will fall on a Saturday this year, meaning no extra day off from work.
Additionally, 2024 being an election year meant we had the benefit of an extra day off. While the election excitement may have passed, there will be some who miss that additional break.
