Many people have had mass clearouts and spring cleaning get the better of them when they come to the tragic realisation that they have gotten rid of something they shouldn't have.

It's not that uncommon to accidentally throw something away, like a spoon in a yoghurt cup or a children's toy, that might lead to a meltdown later.

But would you be willing to search through a landfill to find it?

Probably not.

If it was R12-billion, you might.

One woman accidentally threw out her now ex-boyfriend's fortune and swears she is not to blame.

In an interview with MailOnline, Halfina Eddy-Evans explains how she disposed of her boyfriend's key to his Bitcoin millions.

According to Halfina, her then-boyfriend James Howells had told her to throw out a black bag of trash that contained a "key" to the Bitcoin he had been mining.

Howells said that he had mined the cryptocurrency on his computer in 2009 and the 8,000 coins are valued at £569-million (an estimated R12-billion).

The hard drive containing the key to his millions landed in his local landfill close to a decade ago after Eddy-Evans thought it was part of the garbage he had asked her to get rid of.

Howells has decided not to give up on finding his lost hard drive in the dump.

He is battling with the town's council to get permission and hopes they will give him the go-ahead to dig up the site.
