When you think of the various dangers Australia offers, you tend to think of all sorts of creepies and crawlies.

The country is also home to what is considered the 'World's Most Dangerous Town', Wittenoom.

It poses such a great threat that it's been wiped off maps and you can be prosecuted for even entering the town.

It's not a crime hotspot or filled with deadly animals, but instead is a massive health risk for anyone who dares enter.

Over the years, residents have abandoned the town and for good reason, with the last resident 80-year-old Lorraine Thomas leaving her home in 2022.

This area used to be a bustling mining town with thousands of locals living there in the 1930s. The land of Wittenoom, being rich with blue asbestos, was home to a thriving industry.

In 1996, the mines were closed but not before claiming thousands of lives.

It sits in the largest contaminated site in the Southern Hemisphere.

Some daredevil tourists still make their way to Wittenoom, but it is clearly risky:

According to The New York Times, the area will never be fully cleaned of its toxicity and so the government has worked to remove all traces of the town.

They have turned off electricity and water, bought out the remaining homeowners, and started bulldozing the place.

All with the hopes of keeping out any "tourists".
