GMA EXTRA 12 DECEMBER 2016 (HUMAN TRAFFICKING/HANNELIE)
Traveling to the Western Cape for the holidays? Stop in Beaufort West and help children affected by Human Trafficking and abuse
BACKGROUND: Kara van der Merwe is a 15-year old actress, who played the teenage title roll in the movie “Dis Ek, Anna” - the real life story of a woman’s life of sexual abuse by her step-father. To continue the message of the movie, Kara started a campaign: "Put Your Foot Down Against Human Trafficking”. This initiative, in conjunction with four NGO’s: Anex, Womensnet, Girl’sNet, 1000Women’s Fund, have been doing awareness around sexual abuse during the 16 Days of Activism period. They are also helping to establish a place of safety and Child and Youth Centre in Murrysburg. This facility will be opened early next year, to help young survivors of sexual abuse and trafficking, as a lot of trafficking happens on this route, through the Karoo.
YOU CAN HELP: Holiday makers, traveling on the N1 to the Western Cape are asked to bring along donations of goods for the home, and to drop it off in Beaufort West, enroute to the holiday destinations. The items needed include: clothing, bedding, stationary, books, house hold items, toiletries or anything that can be used in the home to make the lives of the young girls easier.
