BACKGROUND:
Monday, 18 September 2017 marked one year since the shock death of South African kwaito star, Mandoza.
Mduduzi Edmund Tshabalala broke down racial barriers with hits like 'Nkalakatha', 'Tornado', 'Sgelekeqe', 'Godoba' and 'Indoda'. It was hard to believe that the energetic and much-loved entertainer was suffering from brain cancer. It’s hard to believe it's been a year already.
For his wife, Mpho Tshabalala, life has been hard. She lost her husband, father to their children, friend, and bread winner. The 18th of September is also Mpho’s birthday, but it's also the day on which she suffered this immense loss. Mpho has decided to put the pain to good use and to channel that energy towards reaching out to others.
She knows first hand how difficult it was to go through the chemotherapy treatment. The pain, set-backs, 'flickerings of hope', and the inevitable goodbye. She also knows how ill-prepared they were and the disbelief among their immediate community that Mandoza was actually suffering from cancer.
Mpho spent many hours by Mandoza’s side in the oncology unit of the Charlotte Maxeke State Hospital in Jo’burg. She understands the patients’ struggles: the nausea, the side-effects, not having the means to afford the right diet, and supplements, not understanding the disease.
On Monday, Mpho Tsabalala launched her Foundation, in honour of Mandoza, to assist cancer patients at the Charlotte Maxeke State Hospital. She has also teamed up with CANSA to spread the word and to help with cancer awareness among particularly the ill-informed communities.
Mpho believes that knowledge and awareness can save lives, as early detection is crucial to fight cancer. She is appealing to all Mandoza’s fans, for whom the music still lives on, to support her efforts.
