Good Morning Angels: Spreading festive joy to children in need
Updated | By Breakfast with Martin Bester
For the final Good Morning Angels of 2022, we spread more festive joy to children in need after SPAR Carols by Candlelight.
BACKGROUND: The giving keeps going after last week's 20th edition of SPAR Carols by Candlelight! Gifts have been delivered and distributed to more than 3000 children from 11 children’s homes and organisations. On Wednesday, two more children’s homes will benefit from the generosity of Jacaranda FM listeners.
Good Morning Angels received numerous requests for assistance for the Jacaranda and Louis Botha Children’s Homes in Pretoria, whose 344 children were facing a bleak Festive Season due to serious state funding shortfalls.
This morning, they will be added to the list of beneficiaries from the over R400 000 raised during Spar Carols by Candlelight 2022 - to bring the total of children assisted to 3,382 and the number of organisations to 13!

ORIGINAL REQUEST:
Goeiemore Good Morning Angels en Span,

PRESS RELEASE
344 children face a bleak Christmas and desperate new year.” This was the reaction of Charlene Grobler, CEO of the Jakaranda and Louis Botha Children’s Homes, after the state failed to pay the subsidy for these homes.
The Department of Social Development’s biannual subsidy is 60 days late and has created a dire financial situation. “Currently we are not able to ensure that the basic needs of children are met or pay basic expenses and salaries,” said Grobler.
The Jakaranda and Louis Botha Children’s Homes are based in Pretoria. These homes care for 344 children between the ages of 3 and 18 years. “The children are placed in our care after having been removed from their unfavourable circumstances by the court. Here we provide a home where they receive therapy and adequate medical services,” Grobler explained.
The subsidy from the Department of Social Development covers about 50% of the needs of these children homes’ and remains a critical source of income on which the children depend. After 60 days delay, we do not foresee the government paying the subsidy any time soon and as a result we need to appeal for public support.
We are in urgent need of funds to pay salaries and buy groceries, food, toiletries, and cleaning materials for all 29 houses. Therefore, the Jakaranda Children’s Home has launched a Christmas Emergency Fund campaign.
Individuals who want to help the Children’s Homes can donate R20 via SMS. Members of the public can SMS their names to 40308. (Each SMS costs R20 , Ts & Cs apply.)
