From Boksburg to Mpumalanga: Three schools receive some Angel assistance
Good Morning Angels and The Round Table visited three schools in Boksburg, Polokwane, and Davel in Mpumalanga to assist them with helping the children and their families.
Good Morning Angels visited three schools in different provinces where the new school year has started with enthusiasm and hope amid very tough economic times.
All three schools serve communities where day-to-day living for many families has become a challenge to just meet basic needs, but where giving up is not an option. They all want the same for their children: a better future.
Laerskool Piet Hugo Primary School in Ladanna in Polokwane has 1,080 learners this year. The school serves an impoverished community, where households struggle to provide the basics. Many of the parents cannot afford school fees, which need to be subsidised. Many children need assistance with school uniform, sports wear, and food. Despite the need, the school and its children thrive and work hard to achieve their full potential.

Laerskool Davel started in 1906 with 14 learners on the Farm Hamelfontein, between Betha and Ermelo in Mpumalanga. Today, the school has 530 learners. Some 25% of the learners live in the surrounding township and 75% travel the 30 kilometres to and from the two towns by bus or taxi every day. The school fees per child is only R300 per year, which many parents simply cannot pay. The school relies on fundraising for their food, clothing, and day-to-day expenses to provide a good, healthy, and safe education to the children, but being so remote it is difficult for them to approach businesses and sponsors.

Urban Ruins is a free and safe Child Care Centre in Plantation in Boksburg on the East Rand, where children are free to play, learn, and grow. Besides an education, 64 children get two cooked meals and a snack every day at the Early Childhood Development Centre.
The Urban Ruins Youth Programme assists children with school clothing and stationery, and provides lunch and a safe space to do homework.
They also have a Skills Development programme to help community members become entrepreneurs, as well as a Garden Project.
Urban Ruins give lunch to an additional 200 to 600 people, three times a week.
All of this is done by volunteers and businesses in the Boksburg community in order to improve the lives of children and families in need.
