Africa’s first qualified blind tourist guide

“I dreamed of becoming the first blind tourist guide in South Africa."

Nqabohlanga Winston Fani, a husband and father of two has turned a tragedy into a blessing!
The man from Cape Town was born partially sighted, but life took a turn for the worst when at age 13 he went completely blind.
Although he had employment, when his job ended later in life, he never gave up hope that he would still be able to support his family. Fortunately, his prayers were answered when he met Tania Robbertze and Wendy Purdon who through their Backabuddy fund and Cape Town Tourism, decided to fund his studies to become a tour guide.
“I dreamed of becoming the first blind tourist guide in South Africa,” he told Beautiful News.

After finding the school, Fani says he had "to walk more than one kilometre every day from the taxi rank to the classroom."
With focus and determination, Fani obtained his qualifications as a registered guide in July 2023.
Today, he is the first blind tourist guide in South Africa.
His tour guides start in front of Cape Society for The Blind and span two hours.
He says being blind has not stopped him from enjoying the beauty of art and he is grateful to guide tourists in the area.
“Art exists for all people from all walks of life and it should be accessible to each and everyone," he told Beautiful News.
