Breathtaking photos show life after poaching for elephants
You don't need to be reminded of the horrors of poaching. Almost daily, horrific posts circulate the social media world, reminding us that animals are poached for their horns, fur, tusks or anything deemed rare or medicinal!
Elephants are an overly poached species, their tusks prized in the ivory trade and we see these horrors all too often via our social media channels.
One man is aiming to change all that - photographer Joachim Schmeisser, who is showing us a life after poaching for these beautiful creatures. According to Metro.co.uk "Cruelty isn’t Joachim’s chosen subject, especially in regards to poaching, which sees elephants being poisoned and having their tusks – the equivalent of human teeth – ripped out while they’re awake to make use of the ivory".
"Instead, Joachim looks at their recovery. He tells a story of courage and kindness at the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (DSWT) in Nairobi, where elephants orphaned by poaching are nurtured by human hands" and the images are absolutey breathtaking!
The photographs show elephants with severed, broken tusks and scars and are all included in the book Elephants in Heaven, byJoachim Schmeisser.
