“Theatre can revive and allow children to reimagine their neighbourhood."
Hillbrow is one of the locations in South Africa that is notorious for its high level of crime, overpopulation, and poverty.
However, Gerard Bester, a man who is determined to make a difference in the world, aims to change the narrative.
Bester is saving young people from being lured into crime and drugs.
“There are many negative stories about Hillbrow,” Bester told Beautiful News.
“Like all of us, our young participants have experienced the complexities of our country,” Bester added.

However, the former creative director of the Hillbrow Theatre Project is now making a difference in the lives of young people through the Windybrow Arts Centre, where he is the head.
Bester takes young people off the streets and keeps them entertained through theatre.
“Theatre can turn the other into us,” Bester says.
He adds that the lessons the children learn on stage are carried back home, spreading a message of pride.
“Theatre can revive and allow children to reimagine their neighbourhood,” Bester told the publication.
Theatre has provided that young people have a chance to make something of their lives and it is their place of safety.
