Giving young South Africans a brighter future through Mathematics
Updated | By Poelano Malema
Keachell Jeffrey from Cape Town has started an NGO that helps children in rural areas thrive in Mathematics.
Statistics reveal that South Africa has a Mathematics crisis.
Many children struggle to pass Maths and several reports show that South Africa has some of the worst Maths results globally.
Keachell Jeffrey from Cape Town falls under the category of those who could not pursue their studies due to the high cost of higher education.
Although she had a passion to become a teacher, her dream was cut short by not having enough funds to pursue her studies after matric.
Keachll took it upon herself that nothing will get in the way of becoming the change she wanted to see in the world.
“MathMoms has given me the opportunity to live and experience my passion by helping and assisting learners,” she told Beautiful News.

As a result, she formed the MathMoms NGO where she is giving young children a chance at a brighter future by teaching them Maths.
Not only is Keachell’s organisation helping the youth in her community, but it has also created jobs for the unemployed in her area.
Her NGO trains those without formal teachers’ training in order for them to be able to teach pupils struggling with Mathematics.
She not only focuses on teaching them Maths, but also looks at their emotional well-being.
“Some of the kids experience trauma at home which makes it extremely difficult for them to concentrate or even grasp simple concepts,” she told Beautiful News.
Coming from a disadvantaged background herself, she provides psychological and social support for the learners.
“Many are afraid or intimidated by the subject and believe that they won’t succeed. MathMoms cultivates young minds and helps shape the leaders of tomorrow,” she told the publication.
“Through MathMoms, I am changing the future of South Africa’s youth.”
