Jack Stone is back with a brand new Afrikaans EP!
Updated | By Danny Painter
With the recent lockdown period and months of 'man-alone' struggle in his home studio, the Cape rock talent, Jack Stone, returns to his legacy with his first Afrikaans EP Refleksie!
"After all, Afrikaans is my mother tongue, and I recently formed a new connection with it, one that I am now proud of. I feel the time is now ripe for soulful Afrikaans music and that I am now ready to truly share myself with my listeners ”, says Jack.
Jack has made his mark in the local music industry over the past 14 years with his fresh sound, unique voice and energetic style. Following his full-length English-language album Walk On in 2012, numerous English solo tracks such as Blood Sweat & Years and Common Rejection (2014), The Rapture (2015), and Summer Love (2018) have emerged from his creativity.
Jack prefers that his music not be put in a box. "Who knows, maybe ;Refleksie' will create a brand new vibe", he says. He does have an innate passion for various genres and finds his inspiration time and time again through a wide sound. On his own soil, artists such as Francois van Coke, Ard Matthews and Arno Carstens (with whom he has performed in the past) inspire him, but his unique style remains unmistakable.
With its absolute aptitude for a variety of instruments (on behalf of the guitar, bass guitar and piano) and love of raw lyrics, this EP is no surprise and definitely marks a class of its own again. His writing process is very organic and there is never a specific formula or market in mind, he says. “It will then be artificial; and dishonest. At the end of the day, music is my first goal, and to convey my truth with my music to my listeners. Sometimes just a word or sentence can inspire me and other times a thought or melody. The songs Question, Daybreak, Revolution and Remember You Still, for example, chose themselves in the time I was exploring my roots, I simply added blood and sweat ”, says Jack. Reflection is the first part of a complete Afrikaans album that will be released in sections over the next six months, and focuses on introspection, growth, and acceptance. The album clearly emphasizes Jack's sound as a musician and writer, but there are still a few surprises ahead on the album and beyond, including collaborations with artists such as Hunter Kennedy (Hills Fantastic, Fokof Police Car) on one of the songs on Reflection. Along with the release of Reflection, fans can look forward to many music videos, interviews and performances, as well as (when the limited period allows it) nationwide tours with a full band and production. Apart from Reflection, Jack is also working hard on his new English full-length album Forever These Years. Jack has already written most of the songs for this and the album is now in its pre-production phase. His intention is to release this album later this year followed by a nationwide concert tour to share the spotlight with Reflection.
Hope your Monday has been rocking! #jackstoneworld #jackstone #proudlysouthafrican #southafricanmusic
