Bets on next James Bond suspended after flurry of bets on Tom Hiddleston
Updated | By Poelano Malema
Tom Hiddleston is definitely James Bond material; not only is he British, but following his role in The Night Manager, one can only be certain that he can pull off Bond, and we aren’t the only ones who think so.
The Guardian reports that bookmakers Coral had to suspended betting on who will be the next Bond after a series of bets plummeted Tom’s odds to 1/2. The gambling started after the star of The Night Manager was reportedly seen meeting with Bond film director Sam Mendes and producer Barbara Broccoli recently at the Soho House members’ club in London.
“There’s no smoke without fire, and following the big gamble on Tom Hiddleston in the last 24 hours, we’ve had no choice but to pull the plug on the market. Earlier in the year there was a gamble on Idris Elba and Damian Lewis, but nothing has come close to the recent gamble on Hiddleston,” said Coral spokesperson Nicola McGeady to the publication. The alleged meeting, which Tom’s representatives denied took place, reportedly happened a week after Tom was on The Graham Norton Show where he said no one had approached him for the role.
"The thing is the position isn’t vacant as far as I am aware. No one has talked to me about it. I think the rumours have all come about because in the Night Manager I play a spy and people have made the link," Tom said during the interview.
However, earlier in March, Tom told Enews that he would be keen on playing Bond.
"I don't know honestly if I have a shot, but it's flattering that some people think I do. When I was a child, when I was five years old, I remember very clearly on the BBC, they used to play reruns of the Sean Connery and Roger Moore Bonds every Saturday night. It was a thrill that my parents let me stay up past my bedtime to watch it. God forbid you got back to school on Monday and you didn't because that's all people would talk about in the playground," he told ENews.
