According to the index, the average household food basket it tracks now costs R4,051 a month and comprises 44 food items. This basket is based on what households in low-income areas have identified as necessary to feed their families in a month.
The price of the abovementioned basket increased around 5.1% or almost R200, since the index was restructured in September 2020.
One of the factors that the index took into account was, as children grow older, their nutritional requirements increase. It means that the cost of feeding a child increases in price as a child grows older and is also different for teenage girls and boys.
