Is it safe to post pics of your kids online?

Millions of people around the world find themselves sharing their lives on social media.

For some parents, this includes posting about their children’s lives as well, and even going to the extent of posting photos of their kids. Although this may seem like a good idea, it may be more dangerous than you think.

This is because we live in a very dangerous world, and, unfortunately, there are predators out there waiting for just the right kind of information to prey on your child. For one, posting pictures of your child at school, or at a mall or any location can be dangerous. It can give the predator enough information to know where to locate your child.

“There are two things to be careful about. One is the amount of information that you give away, which might include things like date of birth, place of birth, the child’s full name, or tagging of any photographs with a geographical location – anything that could be used by somebody who wanted to steal your child’s identity,” acting director of the Oxford Internet Institute, Victoria Nash, told The Guardian.

Secondly, you are infringing on your child’s freedom, because they may grow up and feel they do not want the world to have certain images of them.

“The second issue is more around consent. What type of information would children want to see about themselves online at a later date?” Nash added.

Parents also need to think of how posting pictures of their child’s extra mural activities, hobbies, and even things that they like to eat may also enable the predator to be able to entice your child.

So as much as it may seem like a good idea to share pictures of your child online, you may just want to reconsider.
