Davy Tsopo: From retrenched cleaner to cake boss

After Davy Tsopo was retrenched as a cleaner, he fell in love with baking and started following recipes on YouTube. Today, Tsopo runs his own cake business from home.
Davy Tsopo, from Linden, Johannesburg started his own business in May 2020.
On February 22, 2020, he was blessed with a baby boy, Travis.

He was working as a cleaner at a local restaurant. Then one month later, he was retrenched from his cleaning job because the restaurant temporarily closed due to COVID-19 and the country went into lockdown.
His neighbor gave him his WiFi password so that he could keep himself busy.

During the month of April, he was stuck at home with his wife and newborn baby. He just developed a love of baking after watching 'Cake Boss' on TV.
"Since I had WiFi I started checking his videos on YouTube and writing down the recipes. We had a brand new four-plate stove but it wasn't connected. The electrician couldn't come because of lockdown regulations. So, when we moved into lockdown level 4 electrician came and connected the stove and I started baking. Since it was my first time, I started by baking simple stuff like muffins, scones, and biscuits."

He started posting on WhatsApp and Instagram Stories. His friend saw it and asked him to bake a cake. It was not perfect but she posted it on Instagram and tagged him.
"From that Instagram tag, everything changed."
He started getting orders and Cakey By Davy was born.
