Die Rypmaakkamer

Spring 1944 – Seven Soviet Soldiers have been captured by the Nazis, stripped naked and abandoned in the locked empty cellar of a monastery in southern Poland. Deprived of all ties to their world, the prisoners redefine their concepts of order and human nature. In order to survive the men resort to murder and cannibalism. Breaking rank and breaking flesh collide - how do they reconcile rank, faith and dignity in such circumstances?  Powerful, thought-provoking with moments of dark humour, Die Rypmaakkamer, Frans Swart’s adaptation of David Ian Lee’s The Curing Room is a bold, daring thriller inspired by true events.

With David Konrad, Mauritz Badenhorst, Dirk Joubert, Anele Situlweni, Gregg Pettigrew, Nathan Hammond and Zack Mtombeni, Die Rypmaakkamer will be on stage in the John Kani Theatre at The Market Theatre from 11 to 30 June, with performances at 20:00 from Tuesdays to Saturdays, and matinees at 15:00 on Saturdays and Sundays.

Based on real events, the play is set in Poland in 1944. Seven Soviet soldiers are imprisoned underground by the Nazis. Deprived of food, water, clothing and with no chance of escape, the men’s morals are tested as their hunger becomes unbearable. The production follows this group of military men, used to adhering to orders provided by a formal chain of command. What happens when this structure is suddenly pulled out from beneath their feet? Stripped not only of clothes, but rank and dignity. . . . Running at the Market Theatre 11-30 June 2019. Tickets available on Webtickets and please be advised of full frontal nudity with strong language and graphic content that may be offensive to sensitive viewers. . . . . . . #DieRypmaakkamer #theCuringRoom #MarketTheatre #satheatre #southafricantheatre #play #drama #acting #art #theatre #theatrekid #performingarts #instadaily #instamoment #instaart
