Have you ever invented something?
Updated | By Scenic Drive with Rian
The Scenic Drive team discussed and unpacked all things creative with studio guests who have each given inventing a try.
An invention is a unique or novel device, method, composition or process. The invention process is a process within an overall engineering and product development process. It may be an improvement upon a machine or product or a new process for creating an object or a result.
Inventions help us in a variety of ways. They simplify our work, entertain us, expand our world knowledge, and even save lives. Here is a low down of our three inventor guests:
Derk Johannes van Niekerk
Mpumalanga-born Derk Johannes van Niekerk has always been a technically-oriented person, so it came as no surprise when he developed his own fuel in the year 2000 in a mission to combat the ever-spiking fuel prices. He proceeded in the same year to develop the ‘Remote Ignition’, a simple network in the car that could be controlled by remote and a receiver that could be purchased from a hardware store. In 2019, Derk invented a Pre-Cast Italian Oven instead of having to buy a pizza oven at a R45,000 price tag. The passionate Van Niekerk recreated his own Audi Conversion in 2020.
John Hicks
The 42-year-old John Hicks hails all the way from Pietermaritzburg and specialises in architectural acoustics. After testing and getting a product prototype, he decided to provide bees with a safe place to land and drink water without the risk of drowning. That is how he came up with Bee Island.
