Kriel was announced as the second-highest air polluted hotspot in the world. Rian van Heerden invited the senior climate and energy campaign manager from Greenpeace to share some advice.
Kriel in Mpumalanga was recently announced as the second-highest air polluted hotspot in the world!
The area’s high levels of pollution are a direct result of a concentration of coal power plants in the area.
Rian van Heerden was shocked when he heard the news, he received a few calls from listeners stating that they are suffering while living there.

Rian and The Scenic Drive decided that they will have to visit Kriel in Mpumalanga to get a proper sense of what is actually happening.
Rian van Heerden and the Scenic Drive team will visit Kriel in Mpumalanga on the 27th of August 2019.
Before the team leaves for Kriel, the Scenic Drive with Rian invited Melita Steele who works for Greenpeace as a senior climate and energy campaign manager, focusing on issues related to coal, nuclear and promoting renewable energies to get a better idea about what is actually happening in Kriel.
"Kriel is an emergency and we need to sort it out."
"People are dying and the pollution in the air is causing illnesses like lung cancer."
"Eskom is in crisis and they can't keep up with maintenance."
"If we can't fix the coal power stations - the next thing to do is to get the residents masks."
"We also need to inform people so that they can take care of themselves."
