Meet our 'Scenic Drive Potjiekos Cook-Off' contestants

Meet our twelve 'Potjiekos Cook-Off' contestants that will compete with our host Rian van Heerden on the 30th of October.
1. Elma van Rooyen - Oxtail Potjie with red wine
Van Rooyen lives in Centurion and loves to cook for her family and friends. She invented her potjie recipe herself - and believes that she can compete in this competition.
2. Riaan Henning - Meatball Potjie
Riaan Henning owns a food truck and sells pizza cones by festivals all around the country. He started his food truck in 2015 and his passion is food.
He decided to enter the competition because of his special
sauce.
3. David Oberholzer - Sweet Chicken Potjie
David Oberholzer believes that he doesn't have a secret ingredient but believes that you should make sure that everything mixes well together.
Oberholzer is proud of his cooking and decided to give this competition a go!
4. Janine Cane - Hake and Haddock Potjie
Janine Cane Googled her recipe and it is a complete winner. She loves cooking - especially making her potjie. Cane is a big fan of trying out weird and new recipes.
She won two competitions and also thinks that she can win our competition.
5. Riaan van Niekerk - Lamb Shank Curry Potjie
Riaan's first potjie that he ever made was his famous lamb shank curry potjie. In 2017, he won the first prize at the Buffelsbaai Potjiekos competition. According to Riaan, his spices makes his potjie a winner!
6. Gareth Pieters - Game Potjie
Gareth Pieters and his wife Iris Pieters first entered the Laerskool Rooihuiskraal annual potjiekos competition in September 2016 when their daughter was in grade 6 in Laerskool Rooihuiskraal. They opted for a Rooibok-potjie and had to cook-off against over 50 other contestants. At the time it was the schools 25th Anniversary which made it that much more special. “When the winners were announced I told my wife it's ok if we don’t win. Then they called our names and we were ecstatic,” she says.
He adds that this was the first year that a game pot EVER won the competition.
“On the 16th September 2017 we entered again and we used Blouwildebees this time. Of course, the thought goes through one’s mind that it won’t happen two years in a row….. much to our surprise.” Again the won, making history by winning the same competition twice consecutively. “We as a family are known for our potjies and have friends and family that never turn down invitations to come to share with us,” says Gareth.
7. Johann Fourie - Durban Curry Potjie
Johann Fourie first made his Durban curry pot in 2006 - and since that day, everyone loved it. He won two competitions in Durban.
8. Lindie Potgieter - Takbok Kerrie Potjie
Lindie's Takbok (Deer) pot has won two prizes. According to Lindie, people are so shocked when she says she can make a delicious Takbok pot.

9. Marius Henn - Sweet and Sour Pork rib Potjie
Henn's potjie has won multiple prizes and he is ready to show Rian that his potjie is the best!
According to Henn, the secret to his potjie is his sticky sauce.
10. Gerald Schlemmer - Beef Potjie
Gerald googled the recipe a few years ago and then tweaked it a little bit. He says people are crazy about the taste and he says the taste is very unique.
He uses a Jimmy sauce that he says is the secret ingredient. He came second to Iris and Gareth – our potjie champs. Gerald says he feels that his potjie can win it this time. He really wants to prove to Iris that his potjie is worthy. He says Iris is a tough contestant to beat. Gerald is married to Melanie, they also have two kids.
His family loves the potjie. He wants to enter the 'Rooihuiskraal Potjie Competition' next year with the fame that comes from winning the Scenic Drive Potjie Competition.
11. Tinus du Plooy - Wilds Potjie
Tinus found his recipe from his grandfather and has been in the family for many years. Tinus is very confident about his potjie and thinks that he will win this competitions.
12. ET Taylor - Oxtail Potjie
Taylor won a competition at Sondela. He made up his own recipe and now everyone loves it. He loves to braai, however, no one can get enough of his potjie.
