"I saw a Black man stand up for his wife. That meant so much to me." Comedian Tiffany Haddish has defended actor Will Smith after he slapped Chris Rock for making a joke about his wife.

American comedian Chris Rock took to the Oscars stage on Sunday night to introduce the nominees for the Best Documentary Feature Award.

Rock made jokes about several audience members, including actor Will Smith and his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, who wore her hair short due to struggling with alopecia.

Smith stormed the stage and slapped Rock in the face.

Smith then repeatedly yelled, “Keep my wife’s name out of your f-ing mouth!”

American comedian Tiffany Haddish defended Smith and said that it is the "most beautiful thing" she has ever seen.

“When I saw a Black man stand up for his wife. That meant so much to me,” Haddish told People Magazine after the Oscars. 

“As a woman, who has been unprotected, for someone to say like, ‘Keep my wife’s name out your mouth, leave my wife alone,’ that’s what your husband is supposed to do, right? Protect you. And that meant the world to me. And maybe the world might not like how it went down, but for me, it was the most beautiful thing I have ever seen because it made me believe that there are still men out there that love and care about their women, their wives."

“As a friend, why would you do that? He didn’t even run the joke by her, but she was hurt, though," she continued.
