News anchor breaks down after announcing SABC retrenchments

A SABC news anchor emotionally broke down after announcing 621 retrenchments - and asked producers to take a break.
In a statement on Tuesday, the SABC said the reduction of employee costs is central to the company's turnaround plan and its long-term sustainability.
Acting spokesperson Mmoni Seapolelo said the total number of people who will leave the organisation is 621.

“The retrenchment process has been extremely difficult for all stakeholders and became emotionally charged at times,” admitted CEO Madoda Mxakwe.
News anchor, Desiree Chauke, emotionally broke down while announcing the retrenchment process live on television.
Chauke asked producers if they could take a break.

Media personality, Bonang Matheba, shared her deepest sympathies with the employees of SABC.
"The SABC played such a huge role in my career, it's so painful to witness all this! My thoughts go out to all the staff & families impacted by the SABC retrenchments," Matheba wrote on Twitter.
