The Scenic Drive's favourite moments of 2021!
Updated | By Scenic Drive With Rian
The year is coming to an end - and the Scenic Drive is looking back on a great year that was filled with laughter, fun and crazy stuff!
2021 was an unusual year for the whole world. The COVID-19 pandemic took over our lives and we were forced to stay indoors to lower the spread of the deadly virus.
Due to lockdown regulations, the Scenic Drive team broadcasted from home in 2020 and was only able to return to the studio in 2021.
This did not stop the team from making you laugh or cry. The show also kept you informed with the latest COVID-19 news, local and celebrity news as well as some memorable moments.
Here are some of our special moments for 2021.
10. Make My Monday - Surprise for loyal Vodacom Bulls supporter - 25 May 2021
One super loyal supporter of the Vodacom Blue Bulls is Shawn Botha. According to his wife, "he is the biggest Vodacom Bulls supporter since he was a child." All that he wanted for Make My Monday was a jersey from the Vodacom Bulls. With the help of the organisation, the Scenic Drive team was able to surprise Shawn with a player's jersey. He also got a big surprise! Watch the moment here!
9. Newsreader Nathan Daniels' news blunder - 17 March 2021
8. What it means to be a man - Dr Jerry Mofokeng - 25 October 2021
In his memoir, 'I Am A Man', the legendary actor Dr Jerry Mofokeng opens up about his son being a drug addict and finding out who his real father was at the age of 58. He joined us on the show in October and we spoke about what it means to be a man….
7. Engagement of Lunelle Kotzee and Gerrie - 8 September 2021
After losing her fiancé, his two young children, and her teenage son in a car crash, Lunelle Kotzee has been looking forward to spending the rest of her life with her new love, Gerrie le Grange. She absolutely loves Jacaranda FM, especially the Scenic Drive. Her boyfriend, Gerrie, wrote us a letter and requested us to surprise her with a surprise engagement live on-air.
6. Chilli lovers try Philicity Reeken's hottest chilli sauce - 23 April 2021
Philicity Reeken tried a new chilli sauce recipe in March and the team said it is quite hot. We asked listeners if they are willing to try the sauces on air. Three listeners joined the team in the studio to try the sauces. We then challenged Philicity Reeken to make the chilli sauce even hotter. Our listeners accepted the challenge to try her hottest sauce yet. Watch it all here!
5. Tribute show for legendary actress Shaleen Surtie-Richards - 7 June 2021
4. Rozanne McKenzie wins Jacaranda FM Office Idols - 25 October 2021
We decided to launch our own Jacaranda FM Office Idols on the Scenic Drive with Rian - where we searched for the Jacaranda FM employee who has the best pipes in the building. Over the course of three weeks in October, employees competed for a spot in the top 3 - after which our marketing manager, Leith Smith, sound engineer, Noms Hlongwe and presenter Rozanne McKenzie made it to the final. Listeners had the opportunity to vote for their favourite. The winner walked away with a mid-week getaway at a game lodge with pampering and game drives. Here’s a look back at the announcement of the first Jacaranda FM Office Idol.
3. South African Nicky Venter spoke about the situation that happened in Afghanistan - 16 Augustus 2021
On 15 August 2021, Taliban forces took control of Afghanistan's capital city of Kabul during a military offensive against the Afghan government that had begun in May 2021. A South African in Kabul, Nicky Venter, spoke to us and gave us an update on 16 August on what was happening there at the time.
2. #Straatbraai at 38 Carp Rd, Bonaero Park in Kempton Park - 26 November 2021
On November 26, we had our first #Straatbraai in almost two years in Bonaero Park, Kempton Park. We were so determined, that even the rain couldn’t keep us from having a braai. Cheryl Heyden was our host for the evening and even our show Psychic, Gerald Burger, stopped by to do some readings.
1. Scottish man reunited with mother after 30 years - 8 June 2021
Ewan Arnott lost contact with his mother Janis Stevenson after she separated from his dad who moved to Scotland with their children. Ewan last spoke to his mother when he was 11.
After Ewan’s son asked about his grandmother, Ewan started looking for her on social media and miraculously tracked her down.
