Kosie van de Merwe was robbed by a man armed with a knife at a traffic light in Witbank.
The farmer from Kinkross near Secunda, told Maroela media that he was in the area to write his exams for a flight license.
He stopped at a traffic light and was approached by a man who asked him for a cigarette. When Kosie refused, the perpetrator became aggressive, took out a knife and demanded his cellphone. He handed the phone over and made peace with losing his phone rather than his life, Maorela reported.
Little did he know that he was going to get his phone back. A taxi driver who unknowingly picked up the thief noticed that he was carrying an expensive phone and a knife.
According to reports, he immediately alerted his colleagues and they confronted the thief; who managed to get away, leaving the phone behind. The taxi driver managed to track Kosie down and returned the phone to him.
