Princess Diana may be most well-known as the People's Princess and one of the greatest style icons of all time, but the late royal's hair is worth noting, too.

From an elegant shag (thick, short-cut hair) to perfectly coiffed cuts, Diana's hair paved the way for the biggest hair trends of the '80s and '90s.

An icon before her time, the Princess of Wales continues to influence fashion and beauty trends almost two decades on from her tragic death in 1997.

Throughout her life, Princess Diana inspired millions of people worldwide with her iconic hairstyle.

But why was her hair so iconic?

“One of the things that were so associated with Diana was this idea of being hidden in plain sight - her hair was a big part of that,” said Linda Wells, the founding editor of Allure, who was working at Vogue when Lady Spencer became the Princess of Wales. 

"The shape and the blondness made her instantly identifiable, but with the long layers at the front, her hair would cover her face when she bowed her head and then part like curtains when she looked up. Diana’s natural ability to steal any spotlight was clearly a sore spot but also a superpower that she wasn’t willing to part with."

Her trusted hairdresser, Richard Dalton, once gave a rare interview with Town & Country magazine and explained: "Whatever I did to her hair became front-page news." Because of this, the Princess always worried having a drastic cut would take over the news, so Richard reveals he was tactical about the change – "We had to be very careful. We had to do it one-fourth of an inch at a time over several weeks."

A TikTok star went viral after she recreated Princess Diana's haircut. 

TikTok star, Rosa Nora Anne, recreated her hair to look like Princess Diana's haircut by using a hairdressing article from 1981.
