Shemar Franklin Moore was born on April 20, in Oakland, California to mother, Marilyn Wilson of Irish and French-Canadian descent and father Sherrod Moore of African American descent. Shemar’s name is a combination of the first three letters of his parent’s names. By blending their names together it represented the harmony of his black and white heritage and the union of their love and character.
At six months old, Shemar along with his parents moved out the country, as his parents felt it would be to difficult for them to survive as an interracial family while the Civil Rights Movement was so prevalent. During the first three years of his life Shemar lived in Denmark, and then the family moved to Bahrain, an Arab Island in the Middle East. Shemar and his mother continued to travel and visited places such as London, Pakistan, The Virgin Islands, Ghana and Greece, which allowed him the opportunity to be exposed to a range of different people and cultures. They moved back into the U.S. when Shemar was a little over six years old and eventually settled in Northern California.
Shemar attended Henry M. Gunn High School in Palo Alto, California and later graduated from Santa Clarita University with a Bachelor of Arts in Communications with a minor in Theater Arts. He was also a scholarship baseball player in college, playing varsity all four years as a pitcher and outfielder.
After several years of catalogue modeling during and after college as well as theater arts training, Shemar was inspired to take a leap of faith and attempt to pursue a modeling and commercial acting career in the fashion capital of the world, New York City. His “Big Break” came from a shaving advertisement that he was hired to do for GQ Magazine, which had been seen by a scout from the Daytime Soap Opera, The Young & The Restless. Shemar auditioned for the role of “Malcolm Winters” against 368 other actors and received the part and continued to play the role for eight years.
Shemar hosted the syndicated version of Soul Train between 1999 – 2003, and also appeared in the feature film, “The Brothers” in 2001. Shemar played a supporting role in Tylers Perry’s, The Diary of a Mad Black Woman. Shemar is now more popularly know for the character of FBI Agent, Derek Morgan on CBS’s Television Series, Criminal Minds.
Shemar has won a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series in 2000 and was also nominated for Daytime Emmys in the category Outstanding Younger Leading Actor in a Drama Series in 1996 and 1997 and Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series in 1999. Shemar has also won seven NAACP Image Awards.
