GMA: Relief for Drought Stricken Animals

GMA: Relief for Drought Stricken Animals

A week ago, we traveled to the severely affected areas from the recent drought. While we were transporting and delivering the water for those in need, we received a number of requests for the dire need of food for livestock who are starving. Today, the Good Morning Angels Fund helped a few organisations with feed.

GOOD MORNING ANGELS 3 FEBRUARY 2016 (SPCA/DROUGHT)

Helping the SPCA to feed drought stricken animals, for another few days ...

PART 1:

REQUEST FOR: Suzette Kotzé, SPCA Stilfontein, North West

ANGEL: The Good Morning Angels Fund

SPONSORING: The GMA Fund will donate R50 000,00 to help the SPCA in Stilfontein feed some 500 cattle most in need. At R1, 200 per ton, this is more than 40 tons of feed.

BACKGROUND:  During our recent #ProjectWaterDrop effort to take drinking water to communities in North West, most affected by the worst drought in decades, we received several alerts to the dire need for animal feed and grazing, particularly in the Stilfontein-area of Limpopo. Two farms in particular are struggling to keep the cattle alive. On 28 December last year, there were 1200 heads of cattle on the farms ... now only 500 of the strongest remain, and the situation is getting more dire every day. Even some rain in the area last week, did not help the situation, as the veld has been left largely barren due to the heat. These animals need feed immediately and desperately.

ORIGINAL REQUEST:

REQUEST TO BE ASSISTED WITH WATER, TANKS AND FOOD ON OUR 2 TOWNS THAT ARE IN DESPERATE NEED AND EXPERIENCING DROUGHT.

On behalf of our SPCA which is based in Virginia and covering 5 towns i.e. Henneneman , Virginia, Theunissen, Ventersburg , Winburg and their townships and neighbouring farms, plots. Towns that we are covering like Winburg, known as Makeleketla and its townships are Old location, Masakeng, Boitumelo, Disco are experiencing difficulties due to drought and lack of water supply. In Winburg we also have commonage camps whereby livestock is kept. Some of these camps due to the drought that we are experiencing are in need of a relief as there is no water and grazing available. In Winburg we have ± 7 commonages with not more than 700 Cattle, 200 sheep, and few pigs, the population there it can be ± 5000 and some are depending on those animals for a living.

The community has lost a number of animals due to malnutrition, thirst. As we working with animals we request that we be assisted on helping this community that is really experiencing certain serious problems also they don’t have water to drink. We will appreciate all the help you willing to give us to help those animals as they are our main priority.

Also the town that is in need is Theunissen known as Masilo, Townships found there are Lusaka,Masilo, Phahameng,Joel Park, Basil Reed. They are also experiencing drought as they have to wait in ques for water and this past Weekend they have lost ± 32 cattle and on Monday the lost another 4 due to lack of food and water. The population there is± 7000, we will appreciate if you assist us with water tanks and feed for livestock, water and food has been a big problem this year in our area. Theunissen has ± 4 Commonage camps with not more 500 cattle, 100 goats, 100 horses and some other species like pigs, horses. We as the SPCA we have tried to help where we can but we only have limited resources and as known we are a non-profit organisation, and we always go an extra mile for the animals.

Please assist us with water tanks and food and any other equipment that can help us to help these 2 towns because they are the one that are more affected by water shortage and lack of grazing.

Kind regards,

Ernest Khakhau

Inspector
