Shark attack in J-Bay (Video)
Updated | By Bronwyn Hardick
World champion surfer Mick Fanning - who went to high school on the Gold Coast - was competing in the Jeffreys Bay Open final in South Africa, when he was attacked by two sharks.
Fanning had just begun his heat at Jeffreys Bay when he was knocked off his board and forced to fight for his life. After punching the shark twice he was immediately fished out of the water by safety crews on jet skis and was not hurt.
The final heat of the 2015 J-Bay Open between Mick Fanning and Julian Wilson was put on hold indefinitely just moments after it began when Fanning was attacked by what is suspected to be a great white in the lineup. Fanning and Wilson were able to make it to the support boats unharmed, but the event was called off and the prize points and money were split between the two competitors.
